Tips for Controlling Road Accidents
According to the latest statistics, about 1.3 million people die of road accidents each year. More than 30 million suffer injuries and disabilities. The road accidents deaths occur among people aged between 18 and 44. The following are the major causes of road accidents; driving under influence, use of drugs, lack of road signs, poor road conditions, bursting of the tires, poor visibility, over speeding and long driving hours. Although today, drivers who break the traffic rules are fined heavily, road accidents have not yet reduced significantly. Many states have also added the number of special roads but this has not yet brought about significant improvements. The following are some safe driving tips which can reduce the number of accidents significantly.
A driver should not drink and drive. The offense of driving while one is drunk is known as driving under the influence of drugs. Alcohol leads to poor thinking and slow reactions. A drunk driver is also not able to calculate distances appropriately. Driving under the influence of alcohol leads to about 30% of road accidents.
A driver should adjust the side and the rear view mirrors. The driving mirrors should be in good positions so as to improve the driver’s vision. The side mirrors should be adjusted such that the driver can only see the rear door handles. The car’s blind spot should also be adjusted. The blind spot is a point where the driver cannot see an overtaking vehicle. A driver is supposed to look at the rear view mirror, side mirrors and above his/her shoulder before overtaking.
A driver and the passengers should use safety belts all the time. By restraining the driver and the passengers, they will not be thrown out of the vehicle in case of braking and collisions. Wearing of the safety belts has been proven effective in controlling the number of road deaths.
Avoiding distractions is another driving safety tip. The main distractions which lead to road accidents are; use of mobile phones, eating, drinking and adjusting the music system. Adjusting the sound system will force a driver to take his/her eyes from the road which is dangerous. The driver should fully concentrate on driving.
The tires should be in perfect conditions. Tire bursts lead to rolling of the vehicle which causes deaths and body injuries. Before the driver starts a journey, he/she is supposed to ensure tire pressure is enough.
Finally, drivers should maintain safe distances between the vehicles in front and themselves. A safe distance will ensure that the driver stops his/her vehicle safely in case the vehicle ahead is stopped immediately.
